Family Promise of Cheyenne

Family Promise of Cheyenne
Apr 21, 2021
Rachel Martinez, Executive Director
Family Promise of Cheyenne

For 20 years, Family Promise has been a premier organization in Laramie County providing shelter and services to children and their families who are homeless or at-risk of being homeless. Through a unique partnership with various local faith communities and countless volunteers, we strive to help families become self-sufficient through development of life skills, obtaining or keeping sustainable employment and finding stable, affordable housing.

Rachel Martinez is a Wyoming Native with an extensive background in federal grant programming and direct services to underserved populations. She received her Master's in Public Administration with an emphasis in Nonprofit Management. Before becoming Executive Director of Family Promise, she worked for a hospital grant under the Department of Health and Human Services for the Affordable Care Act. She also worked under the Department of Education for 12 years with federal TRIO programs. Rachel enjoys community involvement including Rotary, Hispanic Organization for Progress and Education, Wyoming Latina Youth Conference, Habitat for Humanity, and the Laramie County Community Partnership. Rachel has 3 adult children who attend college at the University of Wyoming and the University of Chicago. She and her husband recently celebrated their 25 year anniversary and are adoring grandparents to their 2-year-old grandson, Uriah.

New Rotarian Introduction
Mick Finnegan introduced one of our newest Rotarians at our meeting last Wednesday.
In December of 2020, Janet Lewis was appointed as the Wyoming Executive Director for the American Red Cross. In this role she will assist in providing service in 21 Wyoming Counties, ensuring the Red Cross Mission is carried out. This includes providing direct assistance to
families following fires and other disasters. As part of the Red Cross Fire Campaign, homes are helped to be safer by the distribution of free smoke alarms. The Red Cross also teaches people lifesaving health and safety skills such as First Aid and CPR, they connect military families via emergency communication services should the need arise. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of the Wyoming Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, a role she took on when the chapter was established in 2014. Janet graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Communications and Political Science. She has enjoyed a 40-year career in marketing and administration, primarily in healthcare. She and her husband enjoy living in Cheyenne, where she can watch her niece and nephews grow up. Her hobbies include golf, kayaking,
gardening and reading.

World Immunization Week- 24th to 31st of April
Join us for World Immunization Week 2021

World Immunization Week is 24-30 April
Join with Rotary to promote the power of vaccines.

During World Immunization Week, 24-30 April, join with Rotary to combat vaccine hesitancy and misinformation by spreading the facts about why #VaccinesWork.

With decades of experience fighting polio, Rotary plays a key role in informing people about the power and effectiveness of vaccines. As COVID-19 vaccines become more available, Rotary members are using our experience in fighting polio to help communities with their vaccination education and organization efforts. And today, because we and our partners have worked so hard, wild poliovirus remains endemic in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. But to eradicate it there and to prevent a resurgence in other parts of the world, we must continue to build trust in vaccines and raise funds for polio eradication, including vaccine delivery.

This year, you can take action for World Immunization Week in three easy ways:
  1. Download and share our new two-minute video, “Rotary Inspires Leaders in Global Health,” and show it to your clubs. In it, global health leaders like U.S. infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Co-Chair Bill Gates, UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta H. Fore, and World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus talk about what Rotary has achieved in the fight to end polio.
  2. Post graphics and other content from Rotary’s World Immunization Week Toolkit on social media with the hashtags #EndPolio and #VaccinesWork.
  3. Donate to Rotary’s PolioPlus Fund to help us and our partners deliver polio vaccines to vulnerable children. Your contribution will be tripled, thanks to the Gates Foundation.

Ft. Collins After Work Virtual Cruise Fundraiser

The Ft. Collins After Work Club is trying something really unique as a fundraiser—with the emphasis on “fun".  We will be taking a virtual cruise to visit some of our projects around the world, from Fort Collins to Kathmandu.  (You didn’t know Fort Collins and Kathmandu were deepwater ports?  Neither did they.). It includes music, dancing (sort of), a live horse race (honest), live Bingo, high drama, low humor, and a Treasure Hunt for solid silver doubloons worth $250.  Did I mention we have our very own pirate?  No seasickness pills, no passports, no vaccines, no masks, no covid tests, no flights, just the most fun you ever had at a Rotary fundraiser!  Register at: Cruise Ship Fun-Tacular (auctria.com)
